Orissa is the home of sixty two varieties of tribal people who constitute twenty-five percent of its total population. Inhabiting the hilly hinterlands, they still preserve their tradition and culture to a large extent. They have their own festivals to propitiate the deities, which they celebrate with total freedom of drinking, feasting, singing and dancing instead of abstaining from enjoyment and practicing austerities. They offer prayers to their deities with dance and songs. Social barriers are also thrown open during the festival period which allows permissiveness. Sacrifice of animals and birds to please the Gods is a custom with them. In almost all festivals this is considered indispensable.
The following festivals are celebrated by the tribal of orissa with much pomp and splendor.
