Industries in Jharsuguda

Jharsuguda is fast emerging as the economic hub of western Orissa and there is a vision of master plan for the city by the state government. Currently, many small- and medium-scale steel units are being set up in the town vicinity. These include :

  • Bhushan Power & Steel Limited (Thelkoloi village, Sambalpur district)
  • SMC Power Generation Ltd.
  • Action Ispat Ltd.
  • Eastern Steel & Power Ltd.
  • SPS Steel & Power Ltd.
  • Many muti million projects are in pipeline and will soon begin functioning in the district. These include

    • Utkal Alumina International Ltd
    • Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL), is currently setting up a 0.5 million tonne aluminium smelter and 675 Mw captive power plant here and plans to invest 4.6 billion dollar expansion for the project.
    • Reliance Energy Ltd has proposed to set up a 12,000 mw thermal power plant at a cost of Rs 48,000 crore (Rs 480 billion) at Hirma in the Jharsuguda district of Orissa.
    • Sterlite is developing a 2,400 MW power plant at Jharsuguda.

    The Centre has already unveiled plans to upgrade the airport at Jharsuguda Orissa for providing better communication facility to this industrially advanced zone. Apart from these steel projects and upcoming projects in steel, Jharsuguda boasts other power companies and coal fields. These are

    Mahanadi Coalfields Limited: The IB Valley Coalfield derives its name from IB River, a tributary of Mahanadi River. This Coalfield is a part of large synclinal Gondowna Basin of Raigarh-Hingir and Chhattisgarh Coalfields (Mahanadi Valley) and forms its South Eastern most member. While the coal discovered is referred back to the year 1900, the earliest coal mining started in 1909. Prior to nationalization, three underground mines were operational. Post nationalization, the IB valley Opencast Mines were opened from 1984 onwards.

    At present IB Valley Area consists of three Opencast Mines namely Lajkura Opencast mine, Samleswari Opencast mine and Lilari Opencast mine.

    Tata refractories Limited: With an installed capacity of 123000 MT/YEAR and an annual turnover of Rs. 248.01 Crores,Tata Refractories generates employement for over 1698 people of Jharsuguda.The refractory plant with a high tech R&D Lab is the most advanced refractory of the country.The plant has been in operation for over 51 years already and spans over an area of 386 acres.

    Ib Thermal Power Station: Ib Thermal Power Station, based in Banharpaliis a unit of Orissa Power Generation Corporation Limited a Govt. of Orissa undertaking and engaged in generation of 2x210 MW Thermal Electric Power.As its maiden venture, the company has set up two thermal power plants with a capacity of 210 MW each in the IB valley area of Jharsuguda District in the State of Orissa (Ib Thermal power Station) at a cost of Rs.11350 million. The locational advantage of the power plant lies in its close proximity to the coal mines as well as to the Hirakud reservoir. It has also undertaken the construction of seven Mini Hydel stations having a total capacity of 5075 kW as a technological demonstration.The entire generation from Ib Thermal Power Station is committed to the state transmission utility GRIDCO on the basis of a long term Power Purchase Agreement. Payment is secured through an Escrow Account and revolving Letter of Credit.
