Forming a part of the Chotnagpur plateau, the district is rich in mineral resources and hosts many mines, industries and power generating companies.It is flanked by the districts of Sundargarh to its north,bargarh to its south and Sambalpur to its east, while Chattisgarh forms its eastern border. One of the youngest district in the state of Orissa,Jharsuguda came into existence on 1st of January 1994 after five blocks were separated into a separate district administration. One unique feature of jharsuguda district is that In spite of it being a part of Orissa, the lingual dominance of the language Oriya is not seen here. This is mainly due to the reason that Jharsuguda, lies very close to the Orissa–Chatisgarh border, which gives way for the city to have the minimal influence of the Oriya. So as far as the language of Jharsuguda is concerned, Hindi is the dominant language of this city.

Geography of Jharsuguda

Constituted mostly of hilly tracts, Jharsuguda lies 218 metres (715 feet) above sea level on the bank of the Telen River. It enjoys extreme climate.The summers are oppressive with temperature raging around 47 o C. Similarly the winters are long and very cold with temperatures falling below 8 O C.The river ‘IB’ flows along the Western side of Jharsuguda town and the river ‘Vheden’ flows in the south. The area of the town is 70.47 sq.km. It records an average rain fall of 1527 mm annually.
