Festivals of Lord Jagannath

Devotees in a festival of Lord JagannathThe Indian Pantheon has many strange deities but none so strange as Lord Jagannath. An amazing array of rituals and fetes are observed to worship the deity; rituals and fetes which require painting, craftsmanship, artistic use of clothes, floral ornamentation, dancing and singing and histrionics (enacting scenes of mythological and religious significance),and even culinary skills! This makes the God's abode, the spiraling 214 feet high Jagannath temple of Puri, the most important cultural centre of India.

Among the manifold activities of cultural significance, the ritualistic adornments of the deity, known as Besha occupy a central place. Apart from the Beshas/adornment the festivals associated with the Lord are of supreme significance as well. In all, there are 90 festivals associated with the Lord Jagannath of Puri which are celebrated with much religious fervor around different times of the year not only at the Jagaannath Temple but also most parts of Orissa .However the below mentioned thirteen festivals are the most important:
