Gotipua:An amazing dance form of Orissa

Gotipua dance is a fascinating folk dance of Puri Where boys below14 years clad in female dress dance to the tune at the music. The acrobatic poses attached to the dance enthrall the audience. Young boys put on Sarees and ornaments and paint their faces to appear like girls. They dance and sing to the tune of dubi, tabla, violin and harmonium. Since Vaishanism dissuaded the participation of girls in dancing, the Gotipua dance grew into prominence and popularity in the olden days. It is known that Gotipua had been patronized by kings in the medieval Orissa. They were invited for performance by the villagesin festivals like , Jhulana, Dola, Dasahara and Raja. The subject matter of Gotipua dances is invariably mythology and stories from Puranic literartures. The Gotipua dance is now introduced in the village-Jatras. The Jatra starts with the dance. Gotipua is responsible for popularization of the age old Champu and Chhanda literature.
